All,
As requested at the User's Group meeting, Transarc has set up an area
for sharing of AFS-related tools, hints, and information. The following
describes the area and the mechanism for contributing to this area. We
have contributed some hints, troubleshooting notes, a couple of tools, and
some general notes. We have more hints and troubleshooting notes to move
into this area, which we will do as quickly as possible. But I thought
it was important to make this area available as soon as possible rather than
wait until we put all of our notes in place.

=================================================================
We have set up the an area for AFS users to share tools, programs, hints, and
information that are useful in running and using AFS.
This area is /afs/transarc.com/public/afs-contrib.
afs-contrib:
Index - a description of all contributed material in these directories
tools - directory for storing AFS tools (either scripts or C programs)
doc - directory for any documentation
internals - notes about AFS internals
hints - notes about helpful hints
tools - documentation for the tools in the tools directory above
trshoot - hints/procedures specifically about troubleshooting AFS
man - any man pages for the tools
Each line of the Index file will be of the form:
Location Contributor Codes Short Description
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
doc/hints/next hines@tr NEXT hints for NeXT machines
doc/trshoot/cm hines@tr ALL troubleshooting cache manager
...
The Codes are meant to designate when the tool/hint/procedure is
specifically for a particular platform or implementation. For example,
NEXT, RS6000, XWINDOWS, MOTIF, etc. If the contribution is general enough
for most applications, specify ALL.
How To Contribute Your Work
---------------------------
These directories will have write access for system:authuser and readable
by system:anyuser.
Copy your files into the correct directory, and send mail to
afs-contrib@transarc.com with the information for the Index file and it
will be added. We will then set the Unix bits so that no one can modify
or delete your files.
Transarc will continue to add more items to these directories as time
permits and as we have more tools and/or information.
There is a user contrib area in the grand.central cell:
/afs/grand.central.org/darpa/usr/contrib. That area is intended for
general purpose sharing. The afs-contrib area is meant to hold AFS-specific
tools and information. If you want to submit to both areas, you can
simply create a link from the afs-contrib area to the grand.central.org
area or vice versa.
