The symptoms described by Torben Nielsen on his NeXT, to wit:
>Ok, I tried to log in remotely and that part was just fine. It appears that
>AFS is working alright. But there's some kind of problem with logging in on
>the NeXT console.
and
>On another topic, I can successfully go through klog on the NeXT. But most of
>the regular AFS commands just come back with ``illegal instruction" or
>some other error. Like tokens doesn't work at all. And neither does fs.
remind me of problems I experienced on an RS6000 (AIX 3.1 , AFS 3.1).
Console login failed (incorrect user id or password) though remote
login still worked.
Also, various AFS commands failed with messages similar to 'illegal
instruction', though
the kaserver functioned correctly and remote clients could obtain tickets therefrom.
The source of these problems was the failure to load the AFS kernel
extensions at boot time
(due to a foul up by me). When I loaded the extensions correctly, the
above problems
vanished.
I can understand why AFS commands failed in the absence of a modified
kernel, but why console
login was affected remains a puzzle.
