You need to modify /usr/lib/NextStep/loginwindow.app to do AFS authentication.
I am not sure how to get this done without finding someone sympathetic at NeXT.

You can make this better (although not entirely solve it) by choosing the Large
filesystem option. You can do this using Preferences and clicking the icon
that looks like a Unix diploma.
Another workaround has helped me in some cases. I make a very skinny file
browser and then type a path that will get me to a directory whose parent
directory does not have very many siblings. This way, when the file viewer
goes to fill the column associated with the parent directory, there aren't very
many entries to look up.
