If the news reader can be told where to look for its files, use
those facilities. This works for rn:
In .cshrc :
setenv RNINIT ${HOME}/.rninit
In .rninit:
-EDOTDIR=/afs/cellname/home/user/private
-ESAVEDIR=/afs/cellname/home/user/News
