It's certainly been viewed as a bug before that file editors (including
programs like rn whose principal job isn't to edit files) don't follow
symlinks when they create ``file.NEW'' as a means to replacing an
existing ``file''.

One possible dodge, though, is for the user in question to protect his
home directory granting only ``l'' access to his friends, make .mailrc
be a symlink to ~/public/.mailrc, and grant ``rl'' permissions on
~/public.
