This problem with TeX is probably due to an especially non-robust version of
"getwd" in TeX that fails whenever it gets an error -- even on an
irrelevant directory. Generally, on UFS if you can see a file name in a
directory you can stat it. In AFS you are not allowed to do this unless you
have read access for that particular target.
There are a couple different paths a solution could take here. The big issue
is maintaining reasonable privacy; especially for certain special files
such as those in Mailbox.
We're looking at this problem, and will try to determine a reasonable
solution.
