Now and then, people express a wish to run `butc' in the background
(perhaps started by `backup').

I think the tool to use is `expect', described as "a program designed
to control interactive programs. `expect' reads a script that
resembles the dialogoue itself but which may include multiple paths
through it." The script includes send/expect (regular expression)
sequences, a high-level language and job control. Thus it should be
possible to write a script that controls both `backup' and `butc'
concurrently and responds to output from either one.

If anyone would like to give it a try, `expect' (and `tcl', which it
builds on) were available from durer.cme.nist.gov in pub/expect.shar.Z
and pub/tcl.tar.Z; I haven't checked if they still are. AFS cells in
Europe may find them in /afs/ctp.se.ibm.com/common/usr/src/pd/expect and
.../tcl.
