This AFS-KERBEROS MESS!

I've been working with MIT Athena applications for about 6 months now and
have recently become very interested in AFS. I just read the past couple
months discussion about various hacks to make MIT and Transarc Kerberos
interoperate. Personally, I think this is a terrible, horrible, no-good,
very bad mess!!! MIT created Kerberos and gave it away. If someone is
gonna use Kerberos and claim they have a product based on it, they should
either use it as provided or work -with- MIT to enhance the standard
distribution to meet their specific needs or concerns. I am not impressed
in the least by the proprietary improvements Transarc has made to Kerberos.
I don't have the resources of an MIT or CMU to make the kind of
modifications mentioned here. Transarc should not expect their customers
who would like to remain compatible with MIT to implement any of the hacks
mentioned on this mailing list. I feel that Transarc should rectify this
situation with a standard version of AFS that is completely compatible with
MIT Kerberos. If they don't, I would suggest they not mislead potential
customers by mentioning the word "Kerberos" in their advertising
literature, unless they also include a clear description of the caveats
(i.e., IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MIT KERBEROS!). If I had purchased AFS and
-THEN- found out about these incompatibilities I'd be SCREAMING MAD!

Will AFS 4.0 solve my problems? Will it be compatible with Kerberos V5?
Do I have to wait for AFS 4.0 and move to Kerberos V5 to get a satisfactory
solution to this issue?

Does this situation bother anyone else or am I all alone???
