As straight fileservers on ethernet, I'd look at Sun SPARCClassic
Servers. Standard config includes a 1Gb system disk. We just bought
a few of these and will be adding second SCSI channels, some memory,
and a few 2GB disks to each. Make sure you get SunOS (aka Solaris
1.1.1) and not Solaris 2.x.
I don't know what US pricing is like, but these are pretty cheap for
us compared with anything else.
On the disk side, Seagate Barracuda drives seem the fastest of the
moment: 2GB (formatted), 3.5in, 7200rpm, 8-9ms access.
