at citi, mail is delivered in a conventional way to a mail server.
this machine has /afs, but none of its services relies on afs. (in
this way, it is unique at citi.) the disk to which mail is delivered
is backed up daily. the mail server is pretty much vanilla -- the
sort of machine you would find anywhere.

people are discouraged from reading mail on the mail server, although
we don't prohibit it. instead, they are encouraged to use a kerberized
inc "straight out of the box" from mh. this brings mail into afs-land.

we tried ams, but the learning curve is very steep. i don't recommend
it, as mh+pop+mime offers most of the advantages of ams.
