sections 17.4 and 17.5 of the AFS System Administrator's Guide discuss
creation of new accounts and conversion of existing accounts to AFS
accounts. the section which discusses conversion of existing UNIX
accounts addresses the uid issue and the /etc/passwd issue, but ignores
the entry into the authentication database (obviously it seems
advantageous if a user's current UNIX password is also their AFS
password). it isn't clear how to do this, or even if it is possible.

the question is, of course, can what i propose be done, or do all of
our users have a flag day coming up?
