===============

This e-mail is just a brief reminder that Information Systems launched its
official support of the IMAP e-mail service in conjunction with limited
support of the Netscape Messenger e-mail client on October 2nd. With this
launch, we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight several important
points below. Please feel free to circulate this e-mail within your area
to those who may have interest and/or questions regarding this new e-mail
service.

-- Our current POP e-mail service remains unaffected by the introduction
of IMAP. IS will continue to offer and fully support POP. Eudora for
Macintosh and Windows and xmh for Athena remain the fully supported
programs with POP.

-- IMAP and POP offer very different approaches to managing and storing
e-mail. IMAP does not benefit every e-mail user and individuals should
carefully assess the pros and cons of POP and IMAP before making any
decision to switch. Also, this decision should be reviewed with whomever
coordinates computing support within your area.

-- The current IS supported versions of Eudora do not function with our
new IMAP e-mail service. IS is currently assessing Eudora version 5,
including, its ability to be used with our IMAP service. While IS support
for Eudora version 5 could come as early as November, no firm date has yet
been established nor has a decision been reached about whether this support
will include IMAP. If you are a Eudora user and prefer not to switch to
Netscape Messenger in order to take advantage of IMAP, it may be best to
wait and assess IS' official announcement of Eudora 5 support.

-- Eudora users who are considering a change to Netscape Messenger in
order to use IMAP should be aware that Messenger has a very different
feature set and user interface and will require the copying of e-mail
folders and conversion of address books from Eudora. IS has put together
some key points for users who are considering such a change (please see
<http://web.mit.edu/is/help/consider.html>).

-- At the present time, Netscape Communicator 4.74 (which includes the
Netscape Messenger e-mail client) is the recommended and supported e-mail
client for use with IMAP on the Windows and Macintosh platforms and
Netscape Communicator 4.75 on the Athena platform. All Windows and
Macintosh users who decide to use IMAP should upgrade their copies of
Netscape Communicator to these new versions using the MIT Netscape
installers (please see <http://web.mit.edu/is/help/netscape/>). The Athena
platform has already been upgraded to this new version. The MIT installers
of these programs are customized to include settings for our IMAP service.

For additional information on using IMAP at MIT and Netscape Messenger with
IMAP, see <http://web.mit.edu/is/help/imap/>.

If you have questions about the content of this message, please contact
Matt Brody, Sr. Project Manager, I/T Discovery Process at mbrody@mit.edu or
me at tregan@mit.edu. Specific technical questions on IMAP and Netscape
Messenger for Macintosh and Window users should be addressed to the IS Help
Desk (e-mail to: computing-help@mit.edu). Athena users should contact
Athena Consulting.

In closing, I wish to acknowledge the IMAP Delivery Team and express my
thanks and gratitude for all of their efforts:
