Thanks for the edification.  As for the man pages, apparently the set on my
DEC system are the culprit--- just reread all of the servent related pages
and only getservbyport mentions byte order (and that for the input parameter).
Really bad considering that that is a system where it makes a difference.
And as it seemed so counter-intuitive, I didn't bother checking other system's
man pages (which do clearly state this quirk).  Thanks.
