The usual reason - they thought they could do it better. Although
this .ns thing is weird - I don't remember having to mess with that
when I was using Ultrix Hesiod. It's probably some new
incompatibility they've introduced in a recent version of the
operating system - last time I looked, the only differences were in
how they laid out the password, groups and services databases.
