Project Name: 5ESS upgrade and replacement
Project Leader: Lu Keohane
Report Date May 6, 2002
Submitted by: Lu Keohane
Project Notebook URL: http://web.mit.edu/is/delivery/5ess/
Accomplishments in September 2002:
Cable lengths were modified in the E19 switchroom. Some cables were=20
operating on critical pieces of hardware and had to be done off hours and=20
with great attention to detail.
MIT and Lucent completed a walk through of all three switch sites carefully=
=20
documenting any anomalies. The acceptance plan will be signed when all=20
changes are completed.
Modifications to the DDM-2000 has been completed and tested in all three=
sites.
The acceptance plan was signed with the stipulation that the list from the=
=20
walk through must be completed before payment will be released.
The NW12 switchroom is currently under construction (returning borrowed=20
space to the Nuclear Science folks). Our expected completion is no later=20
than October 11, 2002.
Modified alarms for the remote monitoring systems which is maintained by=20
Lucent=92s Network Reliability Center in Denver.
Approximately a dozen software releases were installed on the new 5ESS.
Telephone exchanges were added to the 5ESS-2000 to provide services to the=
=20
new dorms that came on line.
ICE 9 continues to be updated to include the changes required when working=
=20
with the new 5ESS database (this includes the Cable and Pair modifications=
=20
that have been inventoried during this project).
Next Month=92s plan:
Revisit the redesign and construction plans for the E19=92s=20
switchroom, (e.g. this includes the surrounding offices and equipment that=
=20
had been moved prior to the start of this project. This will include the=20
addition of 4 new staff members and possibly 4 new contracted=20
members). This redesign process will occur in conjunction with Christine=20
Cavanna (I/S Space Planning) and encompass all TNS staff in E19.
Continue to explore strategies related to the 5ESS, Voice Mail,=20
ACD, ICE 9, VOIP, IVR and other applications.
Begin the planning process for the training for the Operations=20
team and technician. (e.g. 5E architecture, maintenance, translations, DDM=
=20
2000 and other newly installed equipment).
Provide training to the 5E Support and Operator Services=92 team.
Issues:
Having to keep Lucent abreast of all outstanding items on the list=
=20
created during the project and especially during the walk through.
Key Learnings:
Lucent has recently acknowledged the significance of MIT=92s=20
foresight into modifying some of the 5E configuration before the equipment=
=20
was delivered. We strongly influenced changes at no cost to MIT on many=20
items before our equipment left the factory floor. Therefore, we=20
positioned the new 5ESS-2000 in a ready state for new and upcoming=
technology.
Thanks,
Lu
