Accomplishments for July 2002:
This was a busy month on the Events Calendar - version 1.6 was released
July 31.
- New Custom Events Calendar service released to the MIT community (July 8).
- Version 1.6 enhancements released: text-only home page, revised menu
graphic items (July 31).
- Article written about Custom Calendars for the I/S newsletter.
- Began conversation with new EAST team leader, Tom Grayson, about
transition of Events Calendar to that team.
- Met with Paul Heffernan regarding licensing of Events Calendar code to
other academic
institutions. Several inquiries from the US and the UK have been made
about the calendar
code and Paul is working with the Technology Licensing Office and the
current licensors (2 former
students) to establish a framework for source code distribution.
- Worked with WCS to include custom events in their support of the Events
Calendar.
Plans for next month:
- Several enhancements for calendar administrators. Events Calendar
spotlight maintenance
screen and the ability for administrators to enter events under a
"Special Events" category.
Community Milestones
- The release of version 1.6 marks a significant milestone in the life of
the Events Calendar. The text-only
version of the home page extends the usability of the calendar's home
page for those with impaired
sight. The custom calendar service allows departments & clubs to
display their own events seamlessly
on their own web pages and is proving to be a popular feature.
Issues:
- Calendar administrators are becoming more interested in the addition of
new Event categories
along with other enhancements which may require a redesign of the events
home page. The issue
of resources for such a project needs to be addressed.
Future releases:
1.7 - further enhancements - no date set yet.
2.0 - redesign of events home page.
EAST transition:
It is hoped that the events calendar can move EASTwards some time
this year.
