Accomplishments in April
-----------------------
The use of the win.mit.edu Domain remains stable at about 115 active
machines and 180 unique logins per day.
For directors and the W2KS&D team, there is a brief list of benefits
and situations inapproporiate to use win.mit.edu, that may be useful
as a brochure for those considering joining win.mit.edu. See:

Ken Hilker of Wise presents the 25 April Container Admins meeting.
His slides are in:

The use of the win.mit.edu Domain increases to 140 active machines and
180 unique logins per day.
Domain containers news:
Building 37 - No new machines, but the cluster is getting fall
reservations and requests for 3ps.
PLC - There is another new machine, bringing the total to ten.
Since the MS/Dell contract is signed, they will get consulting on a
standalone Domain.
OSP - Steve Dowdy doubles his number of machines to 45, finished
moving all his users into the Domain. He hand-installs OpenAFS on
XP.
Treasurer's Office - The three machines used for testing are removed
from the Domain and the container is deleted. Paul hears from Doug
Olander that he is having trouble bringing up his alternative, a
standalone Domain.
BioMicro - Patrick Paul has three new test containers, bringing the
total machine count to 14. Successfully runs a standalone Domain.
Nuclear Reactor Lab - Ed Block joins several machines and tests XP.
MCC joins a second machine.
Architecture has three new containers, with three machines and
server.
Chem E has two new containers, so far without any use.
FSS has a new second container, a new machine and a new server.
Lab for Nuclear Science has three new containers, so far without
any use. David Woodruff attempts to RIS machines, but cannot, since
LNS runs their own subnet.
IS Ops joins eight machines.
Microsoft Redmond gets a container, two Athena accounts and joins
two machines to reproduce our bugs reported through PSS.
IS FLs get two containers for ACS general development, joining four
machines and a server.
Next Community Milestone
-----------------------
- Our top priority is now debugging the OpenAFS installer for XP. See
Issues below.
- Build tools and repository for deploying MSIs.
- Work with desktop-project and the Windows Domains and Servers team
to revise and add to the IS web presence.
- Continue Container Admin meetings, presenting web pages, documents
and ideas to increase the scope of the Domain.
Goals for May
------------
Since Bob Basch begins to work at OpenAFS we hope to start the process
of synchronizing our code with OpenAFS.org.
As last month, we still have three other priorities:
1. Install user apps;
2. Maintain and account for DC sysadmin;
3. Deploy with transition to Support and Service teams.
Item 1 includes supporting current customers, hoping to get help
deploying user apps, ideally in AFS. Apps include Office and new
MSIs.
For Item 2, the Windows Domains and Servers team will assist in
documenting administration and automated event log processing.
Item 3 relates to discussions with Support and ITLT, defining the
user-visible products we shall deliver and focusing on how best to
deploy them. Here we concentrate on Bldg 37.
Longer Term Goals
----------------
- Debug BMC's NetApp server in win.mit.edu.
- Work through the remaining SMA problems on Netscape.
- Get schema OID from Tom C.
- We need to take over what Danilo intended to write, someday:
DHCP & RIS
Build
- Continue to develop web pages allowing container maintenance.
- Get help from Garry and TomC to put non-null Kerberos instances into
Moira.
- Do further work to populate AD attributes, such as white pages info,
from the MIT data warehouses.
- Work with MS to customize RIS.
Issues
-----
Paul has the OpenAFS installer working to the extent that it can be
hand-installed on W2K or XP. In addition to W91, it is in production
in OSP and NRL. An automated build of the installer is close to done,
at which point we will carefully deploy OpenAFS to replace
TransarcAFS.
Still, the bug we opened 9 January with MS PSS is escalated to CPR.
This moves slowly at Microsoft. If it is not fixed, we worry that it
will affect OpenAFS stability.
