Team Name: Data Warehouse
Team Leader: Scott Thorne
Report Date: January 20, 2002
URL: http://web.mit.edu/warehouse/
This month's accomplishments (December, 2002)
=B7 Complete Migration to new server and upgrade database from Orca=20
7.3.4 to 8.1.7.
=B7 Wrote scripts and created test table with BLOB (Binary Large=20
Object) data type to store large image (gif, jpeg) and binary (Word, Excel=
=20
documents) to database. Work with Giri Swaminathan who writes Java program=
=20
to retrieve the objects from the database.
=B7 Work with Steve Turner to create tables/views which contains=20
student and employee information for Parking.
=B7 Fixed a user metadata display problem -- some tables showed=20
duplicate fields on the web page.
=B7 Helped Admissions Office to generate reports on GRE scores and=20
citizenship categories of admitted & enrolled graduates by entry terms and=
=20
admissions programs for the School of Engineering.
=B7 Sent feedback to AAUDE concerning Faculty Profile by CIP. This=20
included input file layout and identified data types for caretaker.
=B7 Spent time getting new test machine (Freewilly) in sync with our=
=20
new production machine.
=B7 Designed logic, implemented and tested an additional piece to=20
Library Item Detail - process of building call_no_search_key for call no=20
type 7.
=B7 Discovered and addressed to the client data inconsistencies=20
(Library Item Detail call_number field stored in ALEPH) and built logic to=
=20
handle cases of defected data.
=B7 Delivered a two hour demo of BrioQuery version 6 to the Budget=
Office.
=B7 Continued converting web queries to Brio 6.
=B7 Had meetings with IS trainers about training for Brio 6 --=20
migration issues for experienced users, basic classes modeled on Brio 5=20
basic classes, both of which can be ready by June, and talked about an=20
advanced class on the more sophisticated new features of Brio, no target=20
date yet.
=B7 Developed and moved into production 2 jobs for loading data into=
=20
the HR_LOOKUP tables.
=B7 Fully productionize Graduate Admissions (add metadata to web=
page).
=B7 Loaded student tuition assessment data.
=B7 Hired Nataraj Iyer to replace Steve Turner.
=B7 Continued data work with the Project Intersection team.
=B7 Began design of the Library Subscription data.
=B7 Continue work on SAP/HR.
Next Month's Plans (January, 2003)
=B7 Complete upgrade of Orca
o Move to San=92s
o Upgrade from Oracle 7.3.4 to 8.1.7
o Upgrade Operating System 5.1 to 5.1a
o Begin to investigate Oracle 8 functionality (partitioning, new=20
Oracle 8 index types) to improve end user response time.
=B7 Continue developing AAUDE release II analysis and implementation=
=20
plans.
=B7 Modify Web Hits processing procedures to include a new web browser=
=20
(Mozilla) and a couple of new browser versions for Netscape in Web Hits=20
reporting.
=B7 Continue work with Parking Project.
=B7 Analyze, design and implement new/improved generic processes to=20
detect and notify DW Team about discrepancies in data loads. This process=
=20
will be generic (like process_files) and should allow to 'add' seamless any=
=20
new problem conditions we'd like to capture.
=B7 Prepare and deliver 2 IAP demos about Brio 6.
=B7 Continue converting reports from BrioQuery v5 to BrioQuery v6.
=B7 Prepare additional Library training.
=B7 Working with Jim Goode tuning the performance of the=20
whbalances_by_fiscal_period table.
=B7 Work on a specification for an inexpensive web server to house and run=
=20
all the Data Warehouse web programs (which are currently on BLUE-GOOSE -=20
which is old and being phased out, and ELSA - which is a personal and old=20
Athena workstation).
o Web/CGI applications from SNOWDROP to BLUE-GOOSE.
=B7 Continued data work with the Project Intersection team.
=B7 Continue work on SAP/HR.
Next Community Milestones:
=B7 Rollout of the SAP/HR/CYBORG - Early 2003
=B7 Load summary (by service) MIT Medical data into the DW.
=B7 Load TLO case data into the DW Waiting on TLO.
=B7 Load MIT Card Office data (including pictures) into the DW.
