Ahh, the Hall process.  Turned the metal from semi-precious
to something you wrap food in.

Perhaps.  But you need fully dessicated ammonium nitrate
in 'prill' form to mix anfo.  And AN is very hygroscopic.

And let's ignore the fact the fuel oil is hydrophobic, or the fact that to
light the aluminum will likely cook off any water in the immediate vicinty.
But this is really missing the point.

The reason you use aluminum is that it begins to burn at 600F, which means 
once you start it that should release enough energy to cook the AN off causing
a nice boom as it oxidizes.
