Absolutely. One of the things that I have found really amusing over the
years is a statement similar to the following "Mainframes are dead", or
"minicomputers are dead".
What people fail to understand, even people who one would otherwise
assume would be knowledgeable about such things, is that there is a
=place= in the world for mainframes, minis, PCs and everything in
between. Each performs certain functions better than the others. Too
often, organizations define a problem to be solved with computers in
terms of hardware they know or preconceptions of what they think they
know, rather than defining the problem itself, then find the
hardware/software solution that is the best fit. Sometimes one is locked
into a hardware investment and you just have to do what you can to
shoehorn things into place as best you can, but when given the
opportunity to stand back, take a look at things many times this
opportunity is passed by.
I suppose it is human nature to look at the world through the glasses
one wears, but it is not always a good thing.
