Spiegel Online reported on Friday that the G8 nations are
pushing for a multi-national convention to force ISPs to
"freeze and preserve" data that an investigator suspects is
criminal while a court order is obtained to gain access for
evaluation to see if it is as bad as suspected (crypto-CESA):

Data "protection" commissioners of several European nations
have met with their Interior and Justice counterparts to work out
a time period that ISPs will be required at their own expense
to store data to assist criminal investigations. The US is reported
to be very pleased with the time period agreed upon by their
obedient allies, although the ISPs are begging for CALEA
type bakshish (as the Russkies will have to evolution in action,
too).
So much for fears of Echelon -- which is making producers of
snake oil Echelon-protection programs a bundle, and doomsayers
and pols bedmates.
BTW, I didn't know that Gary Chapman was a digital security
expert. If so, then I must be too and I dont know jack except what
experts here doomsay.
