MONT-TREMBLANT, Quebec (Reuters) -- U.S. President Clinton traveled to
separatist Quebec Friday to deliver the message that the dream of
independence is questionable if human rights are being respected.
He never mentioned the French-speaking province of Quebec by name, but
Clinton's message was unmistakable: Think twice about breakups during
an era of globalization.
"When a people thinks it should be independent in order to have a
meaningful political existence, serious questions should be asked,"
said the president.
If a people is not oppressed, he said, the idea a group can exist only
as an independent nation "is a questionable assertion in a global
economy where cooperation pays greater benefits in every area of life
than destructive competition."

[Personal question: isn't denying somebody their independance oppression?]
