Pipe bomb costs Washington man his hands
MOSES LAKE, Wash. (September 30, 1999 8:49 a.m. EDT) - A man apparently
building a pipe bomb lost both of his hands when the device exploded in his
garage.
Don McLane, 31, was hospitalized after Wednesday's explosion in a
neighborhood less than a mile from Grant County International Airport,
Sheriff Bill Weister said.
The explosion amputated the man's hands at the wrists.
Agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and an
ordnance disposal team from the U.S. Army's Yakima Firing Range were called
when additional explosive devices were found in the garage.
Inside, sheriff's deputies found two types of bombs: explosives-filled
Ping-Pong balls and 5-inch-long plastic pipes, both with fuses, Weister
said.
Moses Lake is in east-central Washington, about 100 miles west of Spokane.
