To All New York City Public School
Students and their Parents/Guardians:
As the 1999-2000 school year begind, we wish all of our students a successful and productive year. We would also like to take this opportunity to inform you of the Truancy Intervention and Turnaround Program, a cooperative venture between the New York City Police
Department and the Board of Education (and the Kings County District Attorney's Office) scheduled to begin in September, 1999.
The operation of the program consists of specially trained police officers who patrol the streets of New York City for the purpose of identifying students who are not in school during the regular school hours.
Students with a legitimate and documented reason for not being in school will be permitted to continue on their way. All other students will be escorted by the police either directly to their home school or to a receiving high school or site in the borough where they were picked up. It is extremely important that all students carry identification, school program cards or schedules and other appropriate documentation. School age youngsters not in school on a regular school day must have a legitimate reason for not being in attendance at school and must be prepared to show their identification. It is important that all students cooperate with police officers.
Upon their arrival at a receiving school or truancy site, truant students will be interviewed an attendance teacher. The goal of this interview is to ascertain the reason for the student's absence and to identify any problems or issues that may be deterring him/her from regular school attendance. The parents will be notified of the incident, and the home school of the student follows up with a guidance and/or referral for appropriate support services.
The Truancy Intervention and Turnarouns Program is one component of a broad endeavor by the Board of Education to provide students with the necessary assistance they may require to attend school on a regular basis. This program, together with other support and instructional initiatives, has been developed to assist students in the achievement of maximum school performance. A student's success in school is, to a great extent, dependent upon the support and involvement of his/her parents/guardians.
We are asking parents to participate in school activities and events and to encourage their children's effort to learn and grow.
We look forward to working together in making this a productive and successful year, and thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Rudolph F. Crew
