So what's the effect of such antics by Agent Bruce Applin and his Woodie?
Well, 13 year old girls who hang out on IRC hoping to lure strange adult
men into visiting them and having sex with them, a population I imagine to
be pretty near zero to begin with, are "protected" from the consequences
of their actions.

Sir, the assumption that teenaged females -in general- posess the common
sense to avoid child-molesters on the internet may hold far less water than
you would believe. Being a teenager myself (only a few months left on that
title, however), I have ample opportunity to observe the semi-suicidal
tendencies of my peers. I'm not claiming that the majority of teenagers
are absolute retards, but there is a common assumption that "that will
never happen to me" among my peers -- evidenced by a steadily rising rate
of drunken-driving related deaths and injuries, illegal drug overdoses, and
obvious infringements of better judgement that place some less intelligent
teens in direct conflict with the local law enforcement. I'm not making
any sweeping generalizations, I'm just saying that the likelihood of some
unsupervised 15-year old getting her tickles by playing dicktease with an
anonymous stranger in a chat-room/IRC-channel/etc that very blatantly
advertises it's nefarious intent at every turn is not as low as you may
rate it. I've known girls who killed themselves by overdosing while
huffing SHOE POLISH -- this is the intelligence bracket that is also
tampered with by nasty old men at Busch Gardens.

Is the chance of harm here times the amount of harm equal to anything near
the money spent, in comparison to other ways of spending money to better
the lives of children? I think not.

Hey, I hate America just as much as the next guy, but it is comforting that
some law-enforcement officials are aware of the impending danger of child
molestation -- you may think it's underplayed, but you also may not be the
parent of a rebellious teenager -- classically, the enforcement agencies
don't have a clue as to what the most practical way to go about doing their
jobs in general, and when you throw computers into the mix, the problem
increases by an order of magnitude. As I said before, however, they are at
least giving it a shot.

The other consequence is that no adult will meet any kid they know from
the Net in real life, no matter what the kid's situation, because they
have to worry that the more the kid seems to need help, the more likely it
is that they have been wasting their time providing jackoff fantasies for
"child savers" like FBI Special Agent Bruce Applin here.
I don't think this necessarily betters the lives of kids either.
Just my opinion, of course.
