According to one of the books on the time*, "C" was a Scot who
tended to wear kilts at work. One of his countrymen addressed him by name
instead of initial, and when "C" complained about it, the man replied
"Well, Mr. Menzies, if you don't want people to know your name,
you shouldn't go around wearing your family tartan"...

[Probably Robin Winks's book, but I don't remember.]
