Not at all. It's pretty much an extension of other 3Com technology
with a custom ASIC that does the encryption. The software is
carried over and adapted from similar non-encrypting NICs with the
major change being the IPSEC capability.
By the way, lab tests showed that it could do 3DES encryption
at 95 mbits/sec, almost fast enough to keep up with the idealized
100 baseT speeds, and way more than is necessary to support a
T1/E1 connection.
The board is supposed to go for somewhat over $100.

I wonder if the Intel Pro/100 Intelligent Server adapter plays any
