It seems that California considers animals to either be
livestock, pets, or wild. You can't keep wild animals as pets or livestock.
You can keep livestock as pets, in some places, generally not in cities.
You can try herding cats, but you're not allowed to eat pets.
Horses are pets - you're especially not allowed to eat them.

The Libertarian Party has been a long-time supporter of
re-legalizing* ferrets, and was a major participant in the
"Just Say Neigh" Coalition opposing the horsemeat ban initiative
that was enacted in last fall's elections.

(*Some non-propertarian anarchists have accused us of wanting to
homestead ferrets, turning them into chattels, but we're
actually advocating providing these neglected companion animals with
shelter, nutritious diets, and stuff to shred and destroy,
which appears to be ferrets' preferred form of entertainment.)

(ObCrypto - hmmm, this'll be a stretch... There are major corporations
aiding and abetting illegal ferret possession in California,
such as Pet Food Depot. Cryptography could allow these profiteers
to avoid detection by the War On Ferrets, slipping through the
clutches of centralized Ferret Prohibition Officers.
Local snitches could still lead to confiscation of Ferret Paraphrenalia,
but the Internet and rapid package delivery make it possible to
arbitrage the delivery of otherwise-contraband products such as
Purina Ferret Chow or Things Which Aren't Nailed Down.)

				Thanks!
