I wonder if you could get around this toy with a directional antenna of
your own and knowledge of where the nearest repeater(s) tower is/are.

The easiest way is to use it's own trick, burn through the jamming. Buy
yourself a higher power rf booster amp. Of course at some point you're going
to saturate the rf front-end on the cell receiver.
