Jim Dempsey has once again offered the fallacy of
*legislative inevitability* to draw people into what
increasingly looks like a disaster in the making.

The argument works something like this:

"*Like it or not,* there is going to be legislation.
It will either be good or it will be bad. You can
work with us to make it good or you can let it
turn out to be bad."

Does any of this sound familiar?

Who decreed that such a contentious issue as
encryption policy would be neatly resolved by
the 106th Congress?

Of course, it is correct to oppose bad amendments
that the FBI puts forward. But there is no reason
to assume that a bill should pass if it is a bad
bill.

What was it that Satayana said about the lessons
of history?
