When I was selling Fuller Brushes as a youngster questions like
this were often posed by shut-ins. The training we were given
suggested we look serious and say, "yes, we have those, though
I'm not authorized to carry them. Let me place an order, how many
would you like. Here, try this sample." And I'd shake out a Chiclet
from a brown bottle marked XXX. In most instances, doors slammed
immediately but in a few the bottle was snatched and its contents
gulped. The eater and me'd watch each other, I'd be invited in
to witness, shown earthly departure devices previously tried or
readied, scars bared, last notes scribbled and edited video-cams
and lights, prepositioned pet-food fetid, second-thoughts pets
pre-departed to await owner, carpet worn bare in serpentine pace
patterns, gyp board punched, nubs of cigs scavenged for weed,
the tv eye-rolling Zapruder's Jackie's backseat clamber.
What I'd learned from old brush sellers to look for in such proto-typical
end-it-all bower was the bible of self-killers in which there'd be a
passage marked that'd lead to the next clue of the game.
That was then, later, in service to our beloved nation, we'd be issued
capsules before a behind the lines mission, and a whispered lie aside
by sarge, "yours is a placebo."
