I have designed a secure hardware key storage device that makes use of a
tiny explosive charge (less than the charge in an airbag). Any "explosion"
would be contained entirely to the inside of the device and not even cause
damage the computer in which the device is installed. Much less does the
device endanger the operator in any way. The ATF has informed me that such a
device would be considered a "booby trap" under ATF regulations and that
anybody building or deploying such a device will face 10 years imprisonment
in a federal penitentiary.
