Thank for the pointer, Gordon.

Alvin and Heider Toffler were a little drowsy at the throttle, but not
totally. On page 163 they write:

"Steele's vision will thrill many--and send a nervous quiver down the
spines of others. It has cracks and unfilled gaps in it that critics may
be quick to seize on. His direct manner may put people off. And his
dream, like most dreams, is unlikely to be fully realized."

I'd hope not.

"But," the Tofflers go on, "it positions intelligence within a vastly
larger framework than any previously discussed. His campaign is one of
the forces aimed at adapting intelligence to the realities of the Third
World."

But of course! We'll give out a free UNIX system to everyone in Libya.
No secrets!

Seriously, like most writers, I love novelty and new ideas--but
sometimes novelty overlaps with malarkey.

I do notice from War and Anti-War that John Perry Barlow and Howard
Rheingold were present at Steel's Open Sources Symposium in November
1992. I hope that didn't mean the same as approval.

And here folks are worried about the *Clipper*?

I trust that EFF will take a stand one way or another.

Which side are you on, gang?
