I vaguely recall a thread coming through in the past few
days started when someone asked for some real numbers for
such things as "Internet-ready computers" and such. I
didn't pay too much attention at the time but this
morning's post contained a copy of Communications Week's
Tenth Anniversary Issue on "The Rise of Networking,
1984-1994". In flipping through it quickly I came across
such lines as "Some 43 million PCs are installed in
business offices in the United States, and 59 percent of
them are connected to LANs, according to Danielle Danese, a
securities analyst with Salomon Brothers Inc., New York".
There's lots more along these lines.
I haven't read of the articles through yet, but for those
looking for some real numbers about networking (however
speculative they may be) this issue might be a place to
start. The theme articles include "Ten Years of Change",
"The Network Comes of Age", an essay by Al Gore (or
perhaps his staff, I'd guess), Looking Ahead to the Next
Decade", and so on.
DISCLAIMER, DATCLAIMER, UND SO VEITER...
I don't have anything to do with Communications Week, it
just seems to keep showing up in the mail. I suspect I
filled in one of those little cards at a trade show once,
since I tend to do that. In any event, if you use any of
their advice and loose your job, sue them, not me!

The juvenile sea squirt wanders through the sea searching for a suitable rock
or hunk of coral to cling to and make its home for life. For this task, it
has a rudimentary nervous system. When it finds its spot and takes root, it
doesn't need its brain anymore so it eats it! (It's rather like getting
tenure.)" - From CONSCIOUSNESS EXPLAINED, by Daniel Dennett, p. 177
