I have been lurking on this discussion, but it has reached the point where
it is really beginning to annoy me!
This is OUR network. We built it, we run it, we operate it. And we have
prided ourselves on the fact that no one owns it; no one runs it; everyone
operates it. And we seem to be willing now to sit back and let someone put
down a set of rules different than our own - and that someone has the
greatest history of failure in the world! The Internet is not a public
utility. Does anyone out there really think the FCC act of 1934 really did
any good? And here we all sit and wait for them to do it again.
As far as reaching the masses, whatever that means, it will get there. When
there are guys like Dave Hughes running around the world setting up nodes in
the poorest areas of Turkey, Russia, Montana, etc., do you really think the
Internet will not be available to everyone in time? Do you think BIG SAM will
make it available to everyone? Hell, he can't even make America available to
its citizens!
Why do we all wait with bated breath for the utterings of Al Gore? We
appreciate his help, but I don't appreciate his meddling in MY network. Do
you? Has Al Gore done anything to build this network? Not to my knowledge!
Did he give any of you back the money you spent in doing what you have
done? But he sure is basking in the glory of the success we have all
brought to HIS table.
The goverment should get out of the competition business; get out of the
Internet business. If the cost of having it in is regulation, I say no
thanks!
