I continue to find it remarkable that Steve Wolff communicates so freely and
openly with the hostile members on this list. From my perspective as an
educational user of the Internet(Yes folks, teaching and research are
worthwhile and noble activities),  I applaud the efforts of Steve as an
individual and of NSF as a organization in supporting the backbone for the
educational and research community. The decision to extend the backbone for
another year was almost inevitable because of the time that it will take to
implement the new initiative which will be more to the liking of those of you
in the commercial sector.

I personally do not think the amounts involved are outrageous or that there is
a conspiracy involved. If all funds spent by the US. Government provided as
much return for the nation,  we would be in superb economic shape.
