Old news ;-)

IRC made the record during gulf war of going over one thousand and keeping
there until the war ceased. Then it dropped back to "normal" 300-600
simultaneous users. But nowadays it's regular daily routine to have
thousands of users on IRC at once:
*** There are 1863 users and 795 invisible on 135 servers
At present there is 2658 users online. I've seen figures go up to five
thousand at occasions.
