The IRC network has had more than 900 users on line at once, in particular
traffic was quite heavy during the Gulf War and during the elections.
I know I've seen upwards of 1100 people logged in (though I can't say just
how many people were on any given channel).
I would dispute CompuServe's claim of "most heavily attended ever".
