Give a Quote, Get a Job

Here's something I find disconcerting. When MCI held its press conference
on Tuesday, there was a nice juicy quote from Vin Cerf, President of the
Internet Society. The quote was to validate just how important MCI's data
network is and would be in the future: "MCI's announcement indicates the
potential to carry more than 50 times" the traffic NSFNet now carries. Cerf
also is quoted saying, "MCI and its partners, IBM, Merit and ANS, pioneered
the use of 45 megabit per second technology..."

On the face of it, nothing too outrageous there.

But what pops out of MCI PR today, just 2 days after Cerf gives MCI high
marks? Nothing less than the news that Vinton Cerf "data visionary" is
joining MCI as Senior Vice President of data architecture for the Data
Services Div.

Nothing wrong with Cerf joining MCI, fact is, I think it's a positive move.
What *does* get me is that MCI passed off their new vp as an expert, knowing
full well he was going to join the company in just 48 hours.

(NOTE: MCI's own notice tags Cerf with the as a "data visionary.")

We might want to ask Vin if he knew how his quotes were going to be used
and if he knew how he was going to be identified. He surely knew that
he was about to step into a new job.
