re. your very nice arguement for local ownership of Internet facilities
(which is way to long to repost):
first, I basically agree that local ownership and operation is preferable
and more economic when the conditions are right -- towns that have
municipal electric companies generally have lower rates, and lower taxes;
and municipal cable tv companies tend to have lower rates as well
the areas where local ownership and operation may not work are the ones
where I see some aggregate buying clout being helpful:
i. getting out of the local area -- i.e. connection to a regional or
national Internet operator
ii. leased line rates -- either by aggregating buying power, or by
weighing in at tariff hearings
iii. as a first step toward a local operational capability
