The Chronicle is misinformed.  At its November meeting, the National
Science Board authorized extending the Merit award for the purpose of
making an orderly transition from the current architecture and awardee to
the new ones.  The authority is for an additional twelve months in two
six-month stages, with expenditure not to exceed $15m.  -s
