Well, you better read John Naisbitt's forthcoming book, which holds
that, while we are developing one global 'economy' that the OPPOSITE
is happening politically. That we may have one economy, but a
thousand independent sovereign nations in the future! Looking at
all the 'independence' movements, and observing the ferocious
balkanizations going on based on ancient grievances, race, religion,
territorialities, languages, ideologies - I tend to agree with him.
In fact, because it is the *US* which is ahead in this networking
technology, the Internet, and TCP/IP was 'invented in America' I
can see *lots* of nationalistic resistance to US inspired global
'one Information Age' talk. You think the French are going to lie
down an accept even ASCII, 'American' Standard ... much less its
protocols? Maybe in the computer engineer back rooms where there
is a global fraternity, sort of, but as soon as it gets to the
political front room???
Now when Dave Farber was quoted about the 'Cyberspace Nation' that
ought to apply to the UN for status (I told the Hawaiian
'sovereignity movement' that, lacking land, it might become the
first 'Cyberspace Nation') THAT might be closer to the mark
about 'one world.' But only in Cyberspace. Dual citizenship?
Where do I get my passport? IETF? Or does the Internet Society
hand out such things? Constitutional Convention anyone?
