<Is the Internet ready for this?
I'd say it is long overdue. I for one am getting tired
of talking to heads of MIS departments and having them tell
me that the Internet isn't appropriate for use in their
applications because "no one knows if the Internet will
even exist tomorrow." Anyone with only a quarter of a brain
can see that the Internet is the stuff from which the emerging
global commercial network is going to be built. The sooner
this happens, the better, as I would rather spend my time
building commercial applications that use a commercial Internet
than trying to convince people that the Internet is more than
a toy for college kids.
>From my perspective, I would rather see commercialization happen
quickly, if imperfectly, and then we could correct the mistakes
later. What I'm not interested in seeing is a drawn-out process
where we think and plan endlessly to create a perfect commercial
Internet that balances every player's interests. Anything that
tends to put pressure on the various organizations to accelerate
commercialization and focus public attention on the Internet's
commercial possibilities is probably a good thing.
