I spoke with someone at Teleport here in NYC a while ago, he said they
run fiber optic cable all the way to the subscriber's location and place a
decoder box inside to decode telephone etc. In this respect, he said they
were ahead of NY Telephone in the amount of fiber and the fact that it runs
from Teleport all the way to the subscriber (in other words no copper wire).
Obviously, they have a long way to go in running all the fiber to cover NYC.
The other advantage of fiber he mentioned is its full capacity has not been
reached yet, leaving the future open to carrying more data as technology
progresses. In a situation where fiber optic ran through the complete
hookup, wouldn't subscribers have the bandwidth available to move data as
they wished, assuming they were tied into the right equipment at the other
end?
I apologize in advance if this is out of place, I'm new to this list but I
thought I'd jump in with a comment.
