I thought that readers of this list might be interested in
the attached announcement, which was released today. FARNET
is a non-profit asssociation dedicated to the use of data
networking to support research and education. Its members
are providers of data communications and related services.
This agreement will be the first of many, we hope.
PSI is a member of FARNET, a contractor to FARNET member
NYSERNet, and a participant in the CIX, among its other
activities. The new agreement offers an interesting example of
the potential benefits of "privatization" of parts
of the Internet.

> PSI and FARNET Offer Discounted Individual Internet Access through
> University IDEA
>
> June 27, 1991 - Reston, VA -- Performance Systems International (PSI), Inc.
> and FARNET, Inc. announced today that PSI's nationwide individual dial-up
> service (IDS) will be made available to FARNET members and their higher
> education constituents at a 50% discount off the list price of the service.
> IDS had been available only to PSINet participants as a component of PSI's
> LAN interconnect service. This new program will be known as University IDEA
> (Individual Dial-up Electronic Access). Usage of the service is unlimited,
> and there are no additional costs to the user once his or her college or
> university participates. The 50% discount will be shared by the college
> or university (40%) and the FARNET member network to which it belongs (10%).
>
> "University IDEA builds on PSI's three years of experience internetworking
> dial-ups throughout the US," commented William L. Schrader, President and CEO of
> PSI. "With dial-up access nodes in major cities throughout the US, remote
> faculty, staff and students can reach their home institution in seconds for
> the cost of a local phone call."
>
> "FARNET, the association of providers of data communications and related
> services to the research and education community, sees this as the first in a
> series of group purchasing agreements that will benefit all of our members,"
> said Dr. Glenn Ricart, President of the FARNET board of directors. "State
> and regional networks will be able to use their 10% share of the PSI discount
> to support activities such as the extension of networking services to
> elementary and high schools, as part of their K-12 and other programmatic
> efforts."
>
> Added Laura Breeden, FARNET's Executive Director, "In offering this discount
> program, PSI has taken a strong position among vendors of internetworking
> service in support of the research and education community." PSI has been
> a member of FARNET, and participated in its programs and workshops,
> since its inception.
>
> PSI plans to make IDS service available to all organizational participants in
> the Internet (including commercial organizations) later this summer.
