But you don't mention a USENET News feed, regular scans of FTP sites,
use of Gopher or Archie. Remember that in the Computer Science field,
by the time anything makes it into print, it's so old as to be
worthless (by people in the field, not for historical purposes).

While I agree that on-line stuff needs attention, wearing a long-time
editor's hat, I want to point out that several of the journals in the computing
have gotten their publishing delays down to around a year (or less) from
date of submission. This is particularly true of the communications field,
where IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, ACM Computer Communication Review
(especially its annual SIGCOMM conference issue) and IEEE Network Magazine
all generally average less than a one year delay.
