In the 6/10 issue on p. 5 & 54 there is an odd piece
entitled "Schools Mull T-3 Network" where a group of
schools including U. of Pittsburgh, U. of Colorado, Polytech
Inst. of NY and others want to form TERN, Telecommunications
Education Research Network. It would be used as a test bed
and research laboratory. Leon Montgomery of the U. of Pitts
info. sciences and telecommunications dept. is one of the
backers, along with James Sobczak, former president of ICA
(International Communications Assn.), who heads up The
Saturn Group. They are hoping that vendors will provide
most of the equipment. There would be a 3-5 node t-3
backbone, central net management (over each backbone node
too).
Can anyone guess why NREN or interim-NREN won't help this
group? Or have they looked at it and rejected it? It's
hard to imagine they'd find backing for such a venture
in the midst of all the other field trials, test beds and
local developments taking place.
