Dave, thanks for forwarding on this message. I know about the Software
Patent Institute, but didn't want to say anything because (a) I wasn't sure
of the current status, and (b) I thought someone from umich was here.
I had thought that the CS problem had been resolved. I knew that the
examiner I spoke with a few years ago had a EE and a CS; and the PTO said
that they were going to change the requirements for patent agents to allow
a CS degree. My conclusion was that this had happened. I'm sorry that it
has not.
The SPI's lectures with the PTO, and our IEEE IP committee's talks with
them, and working with them to recruit examiners are doing much more good
than all of the complaining. Perhaps, if more of us sat down with the PTO
(sounds like talking with the SPI is the best contact point) and helped,
we'd accomplish much more than when people flame.
