Barry, I am not certain what the announcement means either, even though
I read it just as many others did. But, I have read the plans and strategy
for DISN, the Defense Information Systems Network, which does plan on
integrating the DDN along with a bunch of other networks into one net or
internet. Longer term efforts are to integrate more networks so that
DISN becomes an information utility. I cannot believe that with their
effort to use the commercial networks as "surge" capacity that they would
isolate themselves in the way implied.
The DISN will become a DoD internet, with security integrated through the
DISSP program effort and email integrated through the DSM-GOSIP program.
Actually, I would be less concerned about the DDN being separated from the
Internet then I would be about the DDN usining X.400 only email, which might
separate most of the users in fact.
