When I went to the National Communications Forum a couple years ago everyone
was talking about "fiber to the curb", and twisted pair the last few meters.
This brings the copper distance down to a few tens of meters, which allows
you to get up to Ethernet speeds between the home and the curb using the latest
technology (1992 technology).  Given current advances in twisted pair based
network speeds, I wouldn't be surprised to see 100 mbps between the home ands
the curb.  Of course, as has been pointed out here numerous times, the limiting
factor will be the aggregate traffic generated by your entire neighborhood, but
with fiber you can carry a whole lot of aggregate.

Assuming it hasn't already been dedicated to carrying Oprah and Phil and
Beavis and whats-his-name...
